Tabi
What is Tabi in Japanese kimono wear?
Tabi (or tabi socks) in Japanese kimono wear are the split toed socks.
Description of Japanese tabi or tabi socks
Japanese tabi or Japanese tabi socks are pure white, lined split toed socks. Tabi socks are worn outdoors with Zori sandals. Tabi socks are also worn indoors.
Tabi fabrics
Japanese tabi fabrics are silk, velveteen, calico, wool and synthetic fabrics. Tabi socks are lined with cotton. Tabi should be very well fitted. A person who wears a 24 cm shoe should have tabi socks in a 23.8 cm size.
Wear Tabi socks
Japanese tabi should be put on before putting on the under shirt and half slip. Putting on tabi socks after putting on the Japanese kinomo is difficult and causes the Japanese kimono to lose its shape.
How to put on the Tabi socks
To put on the tabi socks, fold the back part of the tabi over the front part of the tabi, slip in your toes, then unfold the back part of the tabi and fasten the hooks at the ankle.
