Question: did the japanese cinch their waists in clothing?

i'm working on a western meet's Japanese dress that i have to present at the end of the year, and i am stuck on whether cinched waists (on clothing i.e. belts) is a western thing or a japanese thing?
i am aware about obi sash's with kimono's but it doesn't look as though their purpose is to cinch or accentuate the waist of the wearer but it appears to be a practical piece just to secure the kimono wrap style in place...

so is it a western thing to accentuate the waist with clothing (just for pure aesthetic reasons?) or is it also a Japanese trait?

help please

Answer: It's a Western thing. Most obi are too wide to cinch waists well (though they ARE pretty tight when wrapped and tied properly), and if you try to get that look by tying the obi jime tightly you just wind up with a messy, wrinkled-looking obi around your waist. Obi aren't meant to accentuate the waist, at least not in the way that Western fashion defines "accentuating the waist."
