What is Kuro Tomesode?

Kuro Tomesode
or Black Tomesode is Japan's premier formal
kinomo for married women. Nowadays Kuro
Tomesode or Black Tomesode is worn in a wedding
ceremony by mother of the bride and groom
and their female married relatives.
What was the Tomesode
tradition?
In old days
when a Japanese woman got married she cut the
long sleeve of her Furisode she used to wear
and made it short. The Japanese
called this custom "tomesode" which
literally means hold the sleeve.
Tomesode used
to be an ordinary kimono worn by married women
in daily life but in early 19th Century it
became formal wear and this type is now called
Kuro Tomesode.
