About The Japanese Kimono

Question: How can I find out about an old kimono?
It is handpainted and hand sewn. I bought it in California at auction in the 1970s and know nothing about Japanese textiles.
Answer: Handpainted and hand sewn doesn't really mean anything. Most kimono are, especially older ones. You could start by posting a picture of it, if you just want to know what kind it is, since someone might be able to tell you. Someone might also be able to tell you things like the motifs and the appropriate season(s) for wearing the kimono. If you want to know the value, you should post about it on a kimono forum somewhere (like Immortal Geisha) or bring it to an appraiser who knows something about kimono or antique textiles. Posting about it on a forum will probably only give you a rough idea of what the kimono would sell for today, though, and definitely shouldn't be treated as the final word on the overall value of the piece.
