Question: Up to which point in Japanese history were kimonos still considered to be everyday clothing?

Forgive my ignorance on this subject, were they ever considered everyday wear? If so, up to which point in time were they no longer worn as such? Thank you.

Answer: According to anthropologist Liza Dalby (the first non-Japanese woman to work as a geisha), it was a slow decline that began in the later half of the 19th century when Japan had increasing contact with the Western world. Women hung on to kimono as regular everyday wear for a while, but men started wearing Western clothes outside the home and reserved kimono for use inside the home early on. By the 1950s though both sexes has pretty much shifted to using kimono as special-occasion clothing only and used Western clothing as everyday wear.

Prior to that, of course, kimono (or on of the kimono's ancestor garments) would have been everyday wear for both sexes and members of all social classes in Japan, and the term "kimono" (had it been in wide use) would have encompassed a much wider range of clothing types than it does today (kind of like how the Western word "clothes" can include everything from t-shirts to evening gowns).
