This combination of kimono, kamishimo and hakama was later adopted by scholars and men of wealth.

It was in the clothes of women that the most significant changes occurred. Widespread acceptance of the kosode was accelerated in the Edo period through the influence exerted on fashions by courtesans, entertainers and Kabuki actors, who took to wearing increasingly elaborate and colorful kosode kimono.

This style was derived by combining the tubular sleeve kimono worn by farmers and the kosode of upper class women. In order not to detract from the beauty of the kimono itself, the obi of the early Edo period was a simple one made of braided cords.
