What is Kuro Tomesode?
Kuro Tomesode or Black Tomesode is Japan's premier formal kinomo for married women. Nowadays Kuro Tomesode or Black Tomesode is worn in a wedding ceremony by mother of the bride and groom and their female married relatives.
What was the Tomesode tradition?In old days when a Japanese woman got married she cut the long sleeve of her Furisode she used to wear and made it short. The Japanese called this custom "tomesode" which literally means �hold the sleeve.� Tomesode used to be an ordinary kimono worn by married women in daily life but in early 19th Century it became formal wear and this type is now called Kuro Tomesode. |

Kuro Tomesode fabric
The fabric is black chirimen and it features continuous patterns over the seams that are sewn on the selvages. This kind of pattern is called Eba. It always features five family crests shaped resist dyeing.
